McKinney Boyd High School
For our inaugural project, our students participated in a Water Walk at Bonnie Wenk Park. We partnered with WE Schools to raise money to build wells in Haiti. WE Schools is an organization that works to combat the extreme conditions in some of our most impoverished countries in the world.
During this event students were asked to walk three laps around the pond at Bonnie Wenk Park which was approximately a mile and a half all together. During the first lap students walked without water. During the second lap students walked with one full jug or gallon or water. For the last lap students were asked to walk with two jugs or gallons of water. This was to simulate what many people around the world have to endure in order to get fresh drink water everyday. The water that was used for this event was collected directly from the pond at Bonnie Wenk Park and deposited back in the pond after the event. The jugs and gallons that were used were collected by the students from their homes and then recycled after. This was all in an effort to create as little waste as possible during the event. In addition to the walk our students also collected money to build wells in Haiti. Our students were able to raise $2190 which is clean drinking water for 88 people for life!
